Frequently Asked Recycling Questions

IS THE RECYCLING CENTER OPEN?

Yes! The Oldham County Recycling Center is open for drop-off service seven days a week from dawn to dusk.  It is staffed Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.  It is not staffed on weekends and County observed holidays.

DO YOU ACCEPT TELEVISIONS, REFRIGERATORS, MATTRESSES, GLASS, LATEX PAINT, WOOD, YARD WASTE?
No.  Please visit Other Recycling Options, Special Events or Solid Waste Management for assistance.

WHY DON’T YOU ACCEPT LARGE PLASTIC ITEMS SUCH AS SPLASH POOLS, BUCKETS, COOLERS OR LAWN CHAIRS?
These items get stuck in the chute that feeds our compactor bin.  This puts our staff at risk as they work to pull them out.

WHY DON’T YOU ACCEPT PLASTIC BAGS OR ITEMS IN A PLASTIC BAG?
All plastic films wreak havoc on recycling sorting equipment by getting stuck in the machinery.

WHY DON’T YOU ACCEPT GLASS?
At this time, we don’t have a place that will take glass from us.  Also, we don’t have the space or equipment to collect it.

IS THERE ANYTHING I CAN TAKE FROM THE RECYCLING CENTER?
Yes!  We allow people to take boxes and paper from the cardboard and paper bins only.  Nothing else may be removed from the Center.

DO YOU SEND RECYCLABLES TO THE LANDFILL?
Not if we can help it.  Non-accepted items and items in plastic bags are sent to the landfill.

WHERE DO YOU SEND ELECTRONICS OR E-SCRAP FOR RECYCLING?
After sorting and preparing items for shipping, e-scrap is sent to an R2 certified electronics recycler.

WHY CAN’T WE PUT EVERYTHING IN ONE BIN LIKE THE CURBSIDE COLLECTION WORKS?
This collection method is called Single-Stream.  It is designed to move recyclables in the most efficient means possible from the consumer to the Materials Recovery Facility or MRF where they are sorted and shipped to mills.  Cart – Truck – MRF.  This is the best option for recyclers that have invested in recycling equipment of this kind.  The Oldham County Recycling Center is a transfer station for recyclable materials.  Moving large dumpsters of loose collected materials is very expensive.  For this reason, we have invested in equipment that encourages public sorting, maximizes value and minimizes transportation costs.

WHAT SHOULD I PUT IN MY CURBSIDE RECYCLING CART?
Republic Services has this information on their website.  Just remember – Clean, Dry and Loose.

WHY DON’T I HAVE CURBSIDE RECYCLING IN MY NEIGHBORHOOD?
The trucks that Republic Services uses to collect recycling have limitations for navigating certain County roads.

WHY CAN’T WE HAVE HAZARDOUS WASTE COLLECTION YEAR ROUND?
The Household Hazardous Waste collection event is made possible by a grant from the Kentucky Pride Fund.  Oldham County applies for this grant every year and it has been awarded consistently as long as the funds are available.  Since collection of hazardous waste is dependent on this manner of funding instead of local taxes, we are only able to hold annual events.
